Carl George Peterson, 75, peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 26 in his home in New Port Richey, FL surrounded by his wife, Marie Peterson, and several close friends. Carl is survived by his wife, Marie Peterson, three daughters: Tina (and Steve) Paugh (Arizona), Misty (and Dexter) Polk (California), and Mandy (and Jeremy) Gardner (Michigan), eight grandchildren, six siblings, many other extended family members, and many friends.
Carl was born on September 11, 1949 in Marquette, MI. His parents were Carl G. Peterson and Frances (Wood) Peterson. He grew up hunting, fishing, swimming, and enjoying life along the shores of Lake Superior. He graduated from Marquette Senior High School in 1967. During his school days, Carl liked to play sports and work on his motorcycle.
After graduating from high school, Carl enlisted in the US Air Force. Aside from his family, Carl was most proud of his service to his country. His time in the Air Force took him to bases around the world and throughout the US. He served in the Vietnam War, and would later share many stories of his time there with his family. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Carl continued his military career by enlisting in the Army Reserves and the National Guard.
Outside of the military, Carl received a degree from Northern Michigan University as a welder. He also worked in the iron ore mines of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Carl eventually found his way to Trenton, MI where he became a Licensed Wastewater Treatment Operator, retiring in 2007. Carl was active in his union, serving as a union rep. Education was very important to Carl, proven by his many certifications.
After retiring, Carl and Marie eventually moved to Florida where they spent time playing cards, going to the pool, and having many fun evenings together with wonderful friends.
Carl was a man that deeply loved his family and worked hard to provide for them. He instilled this love of family and hard work into his daughters and grandchildren.
One of Carl's favorite songs was Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”. As the song says, Carl lived a full life with laughter, tears, ups, and downs. In the end though, he never sacrificed who he was or the values he holds dear.
Carl will be deeply missed by those that knew him and will always belong in their hearts. He will be remembered at a private Celebration of Life ceremony later in Michigan. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carl’s name to the VFW.
