Dr. Frederick Arthur Grassin

Dr. Frederick Arthur Grassin, 97, of New Port Richey, FL passed away peacefully on Thursday April 14, 2022. Fred was surrounded by his family in his final hours. He was born to John and Lillian Grassin on July 10, 1924, in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating high school at 16, he attended NYU until enlisting in the United States Navy in 1943. During the Second World War he served as a Sea Bee on the island of Attu in the North Pacific. After being wounded in combat, he returned to the U.S. for officer training at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA. He went on to medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating in 1952. After practicing briefly in Ohio, Fred decided that cold weather was not for him and moved to Pasco County, Florida. Here, his medical practice grew and continued for 58 years. From his office on Main Street in New Port Richey, he served as a beloved healer, confessor and friend to all. His greatest joy was in service to his family, patients, community and country. Fred served on the New Port Richey City Council, Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Elks, VFW, DAV, Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, Florida Osteopathic Family Practice Association , preceptor to the MSN Program at the University of Tampa, RHS Parent Advisory Board, physician to the Angelus House, Medical Director to the Seminole Tribe of Florida, member of King of Glory Lutheran Church and in the New Port Richey Rotary. Fred was on the medical staffs of Suncoast Osteopathic Hospital in Largo, HCA Community Hospital of New Port Richey and Chief of Staff of West Pasco Hospital of New Port Richey. A great honor was conferred on him with the renaming of the Main Street bridge in New Port Richey to the Dr. Frederick A. Grassin Bridge. He enjoyed new challenges and life-long learning. As an eternal student and avid reader, he could devour literature with amazing speed and accuracy. Second only to his thirst for knowledge was his love of food. He was always happy to share a meal in good fellowship with friends and family. He is survived by his wife, Sue, children, Susan (Fred), Lorraine (Steve), Frederick (Melanie), Julia, sister, Mary Ellen and Mother-in-law, Dorothy. Ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren, brother-in-laws Ted (Gail), Jerry (Jan), sister-in-law (Paula) and numerous nieces and nephews that enriched his life. Fred will be interred with full military honors at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida on Friday, April 22, 2022 at 2:30. Visitation with the family is on Saturday April 23, 2022 at 10AM with a memorial service to follow at 12PM. These services will be held at Faupel Funeral Home on Ridge Road in Port Richey, Florida. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
