Eugene D. Wiskow

January 14, 1922 — December 7, 1941

Eugene Wiskow was born in Terry, Montana on January 14, 1922. He grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After high school, Eugene joined the US Navy and was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii when on December 7, 1941 his ship, USS Helena CL-50 was hit with a Japanese torpedo as well as Japanese aircraft. There is a book “The Fightingest Ship” titled after her as well as “Escape From the Sea.” After his service duties, Eugene worked 30+ years for the Atomic Energy Commission where he and his team designed and built the first nuclear reactor the USS Nautilus and the USS Skate among other nuclear projects. Eugene was Lutheran all his life and was currently a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Hudson, Fl. Eugene was one of many from the “Greatest Generation” where all that was needed was a handshake for his word. After he retired, he moved to Florida. He was a wonderful husband to Vera S. Wiskow and later to Katharine Wiskow. He was also a marvelous father to Linda Affa and Diane Lowe. He had four grandchildren, Thomas Kieper, Tamara Kieper, Ronald C. Lowe,and Jenna Marie Cross; great grandson, Jordan Storm. Eugene was also a great-grandfather to Steven Storm and Jameson Tyler (JT) Cross. Eugene just had his 96th birthday. He has had an impact on so many and will be greatly missed. There will be a time of viewing and visitation on Wednesday February 7, 2018 from 11:00am – 2:00 PM with a graveside service with military honors to follow at Grace Memorial Gardens in Hudson, FL In lieu of flowers donations to the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society in his loving memory are appreciated.
