Margaret Hanafee

Margaret Hanafee, 95 of New Port Richey, FL passed October 21, 2017. Margaret’s 95 years of life epitomized beauty, family and service. Margaret was born in Columbus, Indiana. She has one surviving sibling Betty; from a family of four other siblings, Harold, Lucy, Tom and Janie. Her parents nicknamed her “Dolly” because of her petite size. Marge had many joyful memories of her family and their life on the farm. Although, from early on she jokingly was clear that she did not want to marry a farmer and continue living on a farm. She was a talented artist and enjoyed her studies at Columbus High School. It was there where she received a partial scholarship to continue creating and studying art at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. After her studies, she worked at Allison’s in Indianapolis. It was then Helen Head and her sister Lucy introduced Marge to her soon to be husband John. He was finishing his Butler education and working in an accounting office. Being a CPA would be his life’s career. Marge married John Hanafee in 1944 and they lived in Indianapolis, Indiana after he served in the Navy during the War. Soon they had a family of four children, Jack, Jim, Tom and Sherry. Marge found time while raising their four children to continue art classes at the YWCA and with various local artists, such as Betty Boyle. Margaret, a prolific artist created paintings depicting the beauty of nature and the Midwest rural lifestyle. Marge also volunteered monthly with the St. Augustine Guild visiting patients in hospitals. Margaret, herself, a cancer survivor knew how to comfort other women. She continued visiting and educating women who had undergone breast cancer, when Margaret and her husband, moved to Florida. In 1976, the retired couple John and Marge, also being avid golfers moved to New Port Richey.They relocated to a golf community. In 1981, Margaret made a hole-in-one on Magnolia Valley Golf Club’s fourth hole. She received a certificate from the Pasco Times and became a member of their Hole-In-One Club. The couple were members of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 5340 High St., New Port Richey. Margaret volunteered weekly at the church’s food bank and helped at the St. Vincent de Paul store until she was 90 years young. In her retirement, she also volunteered as the art librarian for the West Pasco Art Guild, for many years. In memory of Margaret Hanafee donations may be made at www.pascoarts.org. Kenzie Hanafee and her 11 great grandchildren; Megan, Braden, Jameson, Jacob, Peyton, Will, Vann, Lilly, Lizzy, Riley, Ellie.
